Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez led the installation of the Municipal Committee Specialized in Hydrometeorological Phenomena at the newly inaugurated C2 facility in Costa Mujeres. The move is part of preparations for the 2025 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Prevention as a Priority
During the event, Mayor Gómez emphasized that prevention and organization are critical to safeguarding lives and property on the island. “In Isla Mujeres, protecting our people comes first. Every action we take aims to stay one step ahead. We are more prepared than ever, thanks to the commitment of everyone on this committee,” she stated.
The local government has prioritized preventive measures, including investments in rehabilitating the Salinas Stormwater Pumping Stations. In addition to replacing drainage pumps, two new 440-volt power generators were acquired to maintain essential services during emergencies.
Ongoing Preparedness Efforts
Gómez noted that constant cleanup and debris removal campaigns have been conducted across the municipality. She highlighted coordination with federal, state, and civil organizations to strengthen early warning systems, update contingency and evacuation plans, and ensure the operability of temporary shelters.
Training programs for emergency responders and community drills are also being implemented as part of a broader civil protection strategy.
Infrastructure and Shelter Capacity
Carlos Gamboa, Director of Civil Protection in Isla Mujeres, reported that the municipality now has an operational team of 35 personnel ready to respond to emergencies. A new 10,000-liter water tanker has been added to ensure potable water supply during crises, while preventive cleaning of wells and drains has been completed.
Gamboa confirmed that the island has 12 shelters with a combined capacity of 1,160 people.
