Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Playa Norte and Playa Centro have renewed their Blue Flag certification for the 2026-2027 season, marking the fifth consecutive year the beaches have earned the international distinction. In addition, the island received a special mention for maintaining its beaches free of microplastics.
The Blue Flag designation recognizes excellence in water quality, environmental education, environmental management, safety, and services. Mayor Atenea Gomez Ricalde led the flag-raising ceremony at Playa Centro, highlighting the achievement as a reflection of her administration’s commitment to natural resource conservation, coastal protection, and strengthening Isla Mujeres’ reputation as a top beach destination in Mexico and the Caribbean.
Gomez Ricalde acknowledged the joint efforts of staff from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), concessionaires, members of the Blue Flag Beach Management Committee, and all residents who contribute daily to maintaining these public spaces as part of a shared responsibility.
The renewed certification and the microplastic-free recognition underscore the municipal government’s vision of building an orderly, clean, sustainable, and competitive municipality.
