600 Maya Families Revive Hammock Weaving with INMAYA Support

INMAYA officials delivering looms and thread to families in the Maya Zone of Quintana Roo

Chetumal — To uphold identity and ensure the livelihood of indigenous peoples, during the current 2025 fiscal year, a social investment of 190,000 pesos was consolidated, transforming the lives of 600 families in the heart of the Maya Zone through the delivery of looms and thread to revive hammock weaving.

Far from the desk and close to the people, looms and thread were delivered to reactivate hammock weaving to families in the communities of San Juan Oriente and Chanchen Primero; simultaneously, supplies for school gardens were provided to ensure healthy food in Tihosuco, Tepich, Yoactún, Santa María Poniente, Chan Santa Cruz, and Chunhuas in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

These tangible actions promote spaces that drive the development of arts and socially beneficial activities, ensuring that the communities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, and Tulum now have the means to preserve their cultural heritage, customs, and traditions.

In strict compliance with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, these actions executed throughout the year seek to close inequality gaps and combat discrimination.

The director general of INMAYA, Enrique Chuc Cen, led these direct deliveries in the territory, reaffirming the commitment to work shoulder to shoulder with the people to vindicate their collective rights in the political, economic, and social spheres for their existence and dignity.

During the tours conducted in 2025, it was highlighted that, although historically indigenous peoples have been marginalized from economic, political, social, and cultural development, decisive actions have now been resumed for their active participation in the adoption of public policies.

Thus, by respecting their worldview and listening to their voices, the principles of food self-sufficiency and economic autonomy for artisans are realized, demonstrating with facts that the dignity of the Maya peoples is the true engine of transformation in Quintana Roo.
