Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Members of the National Indigenous Plural Assembly for Autonomy (ANIPA) are calling for additional consultation sites in Quintana Roo for the proposed General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples, arguing that a single venue would limit community participation.
The organization plans to submit a document with observations and proposals focused on self-determination, territory, preservation of cultural identity, and consultation mechanisms, aiming to ensure these issues are considered during the legislative debate.
According to representatives, bringing the consultation to municipalities with significant indigenous populations would enable broader participation and allow more residents to voice their opinions on the legislative project.
They also stressed that the consultation must guarantee that communities understand the proposal’s content before providing input, so that contributions reflect the needs and priorities of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples.
The consultation is part of the process to integrate observations into the initiative, which seeks to establish a legal framework for the rights of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples. The findings will be incorporated into the project’s analysis.
