New IMSS Hemodynamics Room Boosts Heart Care in Mexico

Zoé Robledo Aburto director of the Mexican Social Security Institute

During the morning press conference led by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, a live link was established with Zoé Robledo Aburto, director general of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), who presided over the inauguration of a new hemodynamics room at the Cardiology Hospital of the National Medical Center Siglo XXI, one of the country’s most important hospital complexes.

From the medical area, Robledo explained that this new infrastructure is part of a national strategy to strengthen the care of cardiovascular diseases, one of the leading causes of death in Mexico.

Sixth Hemodynamics Room at the Cardiology Hospital

The head of IMSS detailed that this is the sixth hemodynamics room to begin operation at the Cardiology Hospital of CMN Siglo XXI and the sixth inaugurated by IMSS so far this year, all with equipment acquired and operated directly by the institution.

This type of room allows for the performance of highly complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as immediate care for heart attacks, pacemaker placement, interventions on heart valves, and support in heart transplants.

Historic Expansion of Specialized Rooms Across the Country

Zoé Robledo highlighted that IMSS currently has 81 hemodynamics rooms across the country, representing growth of more than 70 percent compared to previous years, when there were only 48.

Significantly, 32 of these rooms were installed in states that did not have this type of infrastructure, bringing specialized care closer to thousands of beneficiaries.

In many cases, he explained, it is the first public hemodynamics room in those entities, which has eliminated the subcontracting of private services and reduced patient transfers to other regions.

State-of-the-Art Technology and Increased Care Capacity

The new room at CMN Siglo XXI features high-definition imaging, advanced navigation software, and real-time ultrasound, tools that allow for the treatment of structural heart diseases, valvular problems, and congenital heart conditions, even in pediatric patients.

It has the capacity to perform up to six procedures daily, equivalent to more than 1,400 interventions per year. Just five days after its opening, several procedures have already been successfully performed.

Immediate Results in High-Specialty Care

As an example of the impact of this infrastructure, Robledo recalled that a heart transplant was recently successfully performed on a patient from Tapachula, Chiapas, who is showing favorable progress.

The IMSS director emphasized that this investment strengthens the autonomy, medical sovereignty, and problem-solving capacity of the Social Security system, while improving timely and quality access to cardiovascular services for beneficiaries across the country.
