Hotel Workers Halt Secrets Playa Mujeres Build

A large group of construction workers in safety gear, including helmets and reflective vests, congregating outside a building under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Construction workers staged a protest outside the "Secrets Playa Mujeres" hotel, located on the mainland portion of Isla Mujeres, after their weekly paychecks were not delivered. The workers halted operations to demand payment for their labor.

More than 50 people participated in the work stoppage, which lasted for several hours. The workers threatened to suspend work indefinitely if their situation is not resolved.

A Planned Protest for Unpaid Wages

The workers had planned the action in advance. Early in the morning, they did not begin work and instead gathered outside the construction site. They were waiting for the site manager, who had failed to appear since the previous Saturday to pay their weekly wages.

To exert pressure and secure payment for work already completed, the protesting workers prevented other laborers from entering the site to continue their duties.

Tensions Escalate into Altercations

As time passed, tensions rose. Amid the demands for payment, the construction workers began to fight with security personnel. The security staff, acting on orders from their superiors, attempted to disperse the crowd without providing a reason for the withheld wages.

The demonstration escalated from verbal arguments to physical confrontations. The workers themselves called for authorities to intervene and help resolve their grievance.

Despite the altercation, police officers did not respond to calls for assistance. The responsible manager for the construction project also did not arrive to address the situation. It is expected that the work stoppage will continue until the workers receive their weekly pay.
