Holbox, Quintana Roo — The island of Holbox successfully celebrated its 29th commercial, agricultural, artisanal, and regulatory improvement fair, strengthening the local economy and supporting regional producers.
Holbox Mayor Jaffet Silbaran Escamilla affirmed the success of the event, noting that not only did island families purchase agricultural products, but national and international tourists did as well.
He highlighted the work of the municipal agriculture department, represented by José Olegario Canul Balam, stating that during this fiscal year they have attended at least six times to offer agricultural products. For local farmers, the commercialization has been profitable and guaranteed, since such products are not produced on the island.
Additionally, he said this approach boosts the local economy because the producers come from Kantunilkín, Valladolid Nuevo, and San Ángel. This also promotes tourism, culture, and environmental management, as they take the opportunity to promote solid waste management since Holbox is located within the Yum Balam protected natural area.
The commercial fair took place at the dome of Holbox’s main park, where families purchased ornamental plants, citrus fruits, fruits, vegetables, and handicrafts. This provided an opportunity for producers to earn profits directly without intermediaries.
