Highway Crash on Playa del Carmen-Tulum Road Causes Major Damage but No Injuries

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A dramatic highway crash on the busy Playa del Carmen-Tulum road resulted in significant vehicle damage but no injuries after a driver lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle.

The accident occurred when the driver of a beige Ford Expedition with Quintana Roo license plates tried to overtake another vehicle near the Caleta Tankah area. As the SUV moved toward the shoulder, one tire hit unpaved ground, causing the driver to lose control.

The vehicle struck the central median, crossed into the oncoming lane toward Playa del Carmen, and nearly collided head-on with another car before spinning off the pavement entirely.

“The material damage is secondary when the family is okay,” the driver reportedly said after the incident, estimating repairs would exceed 70,000 pesos (approximately $3,500).

National Guard personnel responded to manage traffic and conduct necessary procedures, while civil protection officials assessed the family members and determined no hospital transport was needed.

The crash temporarily disrupted traffic on one of the region’s busiest road segments while crews worked to remove the damaged vehicle and restore normal flow.
