Governor Mara Lezama speaking at Maya culture event in Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — On National Maya Culture Day, December 21, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa publicly recognized the historical, cultural, and social significance of the Maya people.

Speaking from Felipe Carrillo Puerto, historically known as Chan Santa Cruz during the Maya Social War or Caste War, the state executive affirmed that this extraordinary Maya culture, more alive than ever, serves as an example for present and future generations.

“Discipline, knowledge, dignity. Our Maya people are one of the pillars of 21st-century Quintana Roo. Long live Maya culture!” expressed Mara Lezama, accompanied by Felipe Carrillo Puerto Municipal President Mary Hernández; Honorary President of DIF Quintana Roo Verónica Lezama; and Deputy José María Chacón.

The recognition was made in the presence of Maya Dignitaries, including Simón Camal, president of the Great Maya Council; Agustina Tah Pech, Cornelio Puc Jiménez, Alejandro Cahuich May, Miguel May Aké, Juan Bautista, Gabino Cruz, Víctor Balam, Donaciano Pot, Medardo Caamal and Venancia, along with an invited Maya magistrate.

During the commemoration, Mara Lezama highlighted that Maya culture is one of humanity’s oldest and most important civilizations, pioneering the creation and use of zero, the vigesimal numerical system, and its own phonetic and syllabic writing system, developed practically without external influence, as well as the only advanced civilization that flourished in a tropical jungle environment.

She also emphasized that the Yucatec Maya were the only indigenous people of the American continent never conquered by the Spanish, reinforcing their legacy of resistance, dignity, and autonomy.

The Governor recalled that, by decree of the Senate Chamber in 2014, December 21 was officially established as National Maya Culture Day, a date that recognizes the historical roots of a people whose struggle for freedom and respect for their ways of life, a legacy from their ancestors, marked the region’s development.
