Cozumel, Mexico — The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) is inviting children aged 8 to 13 to participate in “Birds and Sunsets,” an educational event focused on birdwatching and biodiversity appreciation. The activity will take place at the Laguna Colombia State Ecological Park, commonly known as Punta Sur, on Friday, August 8, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
A Unique Opportunity to Connect with Nature
The event aims to foster a love for nature and educate participants about the species inhabiting this protected natural area. Children will enjoy a guided tour highlighting the island’s diverse birdlife, with a special emphasis on species visible during sunset.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, Director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), confirmed that the activity is free, includes transportation, and has limited availability. Registrations are now open and can be completed by calling 987 112 97 91.
A Haven for Protected Species
Chacón Díaz noted that Punta Sur is home to nearly 200 bird species, many of which are protected under Mexico’s Official Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, including the reddish egret, American flamingo, and least tern. While dawn is typically ideal for birdwatching, he explained that sunset also offers a remarkable opportunity, as many avian species become active in preparation for nightfall, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.
Aligning with State Initiatives
FPMC General Director Juanita Alonso Marrufo emphasized that the event aligns with the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The initiative encourages younger generations to engage with nature, fostering awareness and commitment to conservation.
