Cancun, Quintana Roo — A former ministerial police officer was found guilty early Saturday for his role in the disappearance of two young people in February 2020, a case that has drawn criticism over alleged investigative failures by authorities.
Jorge Luis Fonseca was convicted of unlawfully depriving Diana Garcia Rivera and Jorge Armando Kiau of their liberty. The two were last seen leaving a nightclub at Plaza Infinity in Cancun.
The judge reached the verdict after reviewing documentary evidence and witness testimony that established the former agent’s involvement in the crime.
Romana Rivera, mother of one of the victims and a member of the collective “Truth, Memory and Justice,” said the sentence will be announced on June 10 during a hearing to determine the penalty based on the severity of the crime and the number of victims.
According to Rivera, although Fonseca was no longer on active duty at the time of the disappearance, investigators proved his direct participation, leading to the conviction.
She added that the investigation remains open, as another former ministerial police officer is still under prosecution for the same case and is expected to face trial in the coming weeks.
For the families, the ruling marks a significant step in their pursuit of justice after more than six years marked by delays, negligence, and lack of results, while they continue searching for the young people, who remain missing.
