Ex-Cancún security chief accused of domestic violence threats

Former Cancún Security Secretary José Luis Jonathan

Cancún, Mexico — A significant security mobilization occurred at the Palmaris residential complex in Cancún after neighbors reported death threats, physical assaults, and the alleged possession of a firearm on CYCA Street.

According to testimonies from residents and videos circulating on social media, the alleged perpetrator is José Luis Jonathan, former Secretary of Citizen Security of Cancún, who currently presents himself publicly as a candidate for criminal judge.

Allegations of Threats and Assault Against Partner

According to gathered accounts, José Luis allegedly engaged in an episode of extreme violence, in which he reportedly threatened the life of a former police officer identified as Gustavo Chan and physically assaulted his romantic partner.

Investigation Under Possible Attempted Femicide

The accounts indicate that the woman suffered assaults of such magnitude that authorities are analyzing the case as a possible attempted femicide. However, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has not yet issued an official statement confirming this line of investigation.

It also emerged that, allegedly, the woman stated she did not request the intervention of the authorities, a version that must also be clarified in the corresponding process.

Alleged Firearm Possession Caused Panic

Neighbors of the subdivision indicated that the former official allegedly carried a short firearm, apparently a Glock-type, with which he reportedly intimidated both residents and private security personnel.

Guards Took Shelter Due to Risk

The situation caused moments of panic, to the extent that the residential guards opted to take shelter due to the risk posed by the alleged possession of the weapon.

Police Operation Without Report of Arrest

Following the calls for help, various police units arrived at the scene, including those identified with numbers 5696, 5650, and 12345, under the coordination of Officer Fernando Avilés.

Despite the deployment, no arrest of the former official was reported, which has generated questions among the residents of the complex.

Demand for Intervention by Attorney General’s Office and Application of Zero Tolerance Law

The case has provoked outrage among Palmaris neighbors, who demand:

  • The immediate intervention of the State Attorney General’s Office.
  • The strict application of the Zero Tolerance Law against violence.
  • An impartial and privilege-free action by the Judicial Power, given the accused’s background in public security positions.
