Playa del Carmen, Mexico — On Saturday evening, Playa del Carmen hosted a gala celebration of diversity, inclusion, and pride during the first edition of the Premios Orgullo México (POM) at the Teatro de la Ciudad "Xaman Ha." The event recognized prominent individuals, collectives, and organizations whose activities and actions have significantly contributed to the defense of human rights and the visibility of the LGBTTTIQA+ community in Quintana Roo and across the country.
Councilwoman Danna Ramírez Hernández, representing Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, highlighted the importance of continuing to build an inclusive municipality that respects individual freedoms. "This ceremony is an act of visibility, of justice, and of recognition towards those who, from art, culture, activism, sports, and community life, defend their identity and dignity with courage and pride," she stated.
For her part, Deyanira Martínez, Secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, who requested a minute of silence for those no longer present but who left an indelible legacy with their actions, stated that under the government of Estefanía Mercado, bridges have been built to ensure Playa del Carmen is an inclusive, just, and respectful destination. "Playa del Carmen shines not only for its sun and sand but also for its diversity, its freedom, and its pride."
Meanwhile, the Director of Diversity, Gabriel Álvarez, thanked the founders of the POM awards for choosing Playa del Carmen as the first host for the presentation of these recognitions, which marks a before and after. "Today we celebrate diversity, courage, and the pride of being who we are. Thanks to the award winners for being living examples that the struggle is worth it and to Municipal President Estefanía Mercado for her firm commitment to inclusion and respect for sexual diversity," he emphasized.
In addition to the POM awards, recognitions were presented to municipal authorities, activists, and dance and theater groups that enlivened the event, as well as to the event hosts.
