Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to fostering sports as a tool for social transformation and youth development, the municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez, successfully hosted the first-ever Amateur Boxing Dual Meet at the Domo Bicentenario.
The event, organized in coordination with and endorsed by the Quintana Roo Boxing Association A.C., brought together dozens of local talents from Isla Mujeres, including participants from the island, the Continental Zone, and the municipality of Benito Juárez. The competition was marked by energy, excitement, and a strong emphasis on sportsmanship.
Promoting Boxing and Community Values
The primary objective of the event was to promote boxing among the youth of Isla Mujeres, fostering community identity, improving physical fitness, and reinforcing core values such as discipline, respect, and perseverance. The program featured two exhibition matches and 20 official bouts, with winners receiving championship belts and all participants earning recognition.
These matches also served as qualifiers for the Popular Sports Games, organized by the Quintana Roo Sports Commission, which will take place in Cozumel this August.
Honoring Boxing Advocates
In a special ceremony, the event paid tribute to Rutilio Briceño and Roberto Luis Arturo Bracamontes, two prominent figures in the advancement of boxing in the region. The recognition highlighted the community’s gratitude and admiration for their contributions to the sport.
Spectators filled the stands, cheering enthusiastically as young boxers showcased their skill and determination, supported by their coaches and clubs.
A Commitment to Sports Development
With this historic event, the Municipal Government reaffirmed its dedication to sports as a catalyst for change, pledging to create more opportunities for participation, integration, and healthy competition for Isla Mujeres athletes.
