Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico — The municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto in Quintana Roo recorded a temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius this week, marking the coldest reading in the state in over 40 years, the State Civil Protection Coordination announced.
Other municipalities also saw significant drops: Playa del Carmen and José María Morelos reached 9 degrees, Chetumal 9.3 degrees, and Cancún 11 degrees Celsius, with some values not documented for decades.
Guillermo Núñez, head of the State Civil Protection Coordination, noted that the winter season remains active, with up to 50 cold fronts expected, prompting ongoing monitoring and preventive alerts.
“This temperature drop is one of the most significant in the state’s recent history; similar values haven’t been recorded in 40 years,” Núñez said.
In response, the Quintana Roo government activated support measures for vulnerable communities, including distributing blankets through DIF Quintana Roo to mitigate the cold’s effects.
