PROGRESO, YUCATAN — Federal authorities seized more than 180,000 liters of allegedly illegal fuel on a property in the municipality of Progreso during an operation carried out in the early hours of Friday in the comisaría of Flamboyanes.
Personnel from the Attorney General's Office (FGR), the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), and agents from the state Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) participated in the action.
Trucks and containers allegedly used for "huachicol," a term for illicit fuel trade, were also confiscated at the site. There were no arrests.
According to unofficial reports, the raided property belongs to the former PAN mayor of Progreso, Julián Zacarías Curi, who governed the port for two consecutive terms (2018-2021 and 2021-2024) and was a candidate for federal deputy in the 2024 election, which he lost.
As of Friday night, the former official had not commented on these allegations, despite his habitual activity on social media. The property was placed under federal guard.
The port of Progreso, located 36 kilometers from Mérida, is considered the most important in Yucatan due to its economic and touristic relevance.
This seizure adds to other blows against hydrocarbon theft in the entity. Last August, 110,000 liters of fuel of illicit origin were confiscated on the Umán-Tebec highway.
According to the National Census of Federal and State Public Security by Inegi, Yucatan led the national list of hydrocarbon seizures in 2024, with a total of 1,726,244 liters secured, equivalent to 16.9% of all fuel seized in the country.
