Starting from April, the Caribbean Sea is expected to see an increased presence of sargassum, a type of seaweed. Predictions indicate that it will begin to reach the shores of Quintana Roo by June, according to the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network. The network anticipates a significant amount of sargassum to arrive.

The monitoring network, led by Esteban Amaro Mauricio, has been tracking the seaweed from December 2024 to June 2025. The months with the highest sargassum presence are projected to be from April to June 2025, when the seaweed will near Quintana Roo's shores.

In the previous year, a total of 37,000 tons of sargassum were collected from shallow waters and beaches. To combat this environmental occurrence, the Navy Department and the State Government jointly invested 125 million 600 thousand pesos.

Over 300 navy personnel were involved in the operation, utilizing one sargassum vessel, 22 sargassum boats, and a fleet of smaller vessels. Additionally, containment barriers, beach sweepers, and collector bands were installed to manage the sargassum influx.
