Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado and Senator Eugenio Segura headlined the forum “Construyendo Justicia” (Building Justice), where they voiced support for a judicial reform proposal by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Fourth Transformation movement. The event underscored calls for greater transparency and public participation in Mexico’s judiciary.

A Push for Judicial Reform

During her address, Mayor Mercado asserted that justice must transition from an exclusive system to one that serves the people. She emphasized that true transformation requires a judiciary grounded in fairness, legality, and dignity.

“Without justice, there is no real transformation. This isn’t just about changing names—it’s about shifting the logic: from unchecked power to accountable power, from elites serving themselves to serving the people,” Mercado stated.

She endorsed the proposal for judges, magistrates, and ministers to be elected by popular vote, framing it as a democratic necessity rather than a political whim. “The people are ready to take a leading role in this transformation. If we want a just, free, and peaceful Mexico, we need a judiciary that stands with the people—not as an obstacle, but as an engine of change,” she added.

Senator Segura echoed these sentiments, describing judicial reform as a matter of social justice and historical debt to the nation. “Democratizing the judiciary is essential to align the legal system with the people’s interests, not private agendas,” he declared.

Broad Participation and Key Attendees

The forum also featured speeches from Senators María Guadalupe Chavira de la Rosa and Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, Deputy Jorge Sanen Cervantes, and Dr. Bianca Robles, who outlined a citizen outreach platform ahead of the critical June 1 reform process. Deputies Humberto Aldana and Mildred Ávila Vera, union representatives, and local residents also attended.

The event reinforced Playa del Carmen’s role in advancing democratic engagement, with Mercado and Segura positioning judicial reform as pivotal to Mexico’s ongoing transformation.
