Prehistoric Crocodile Model Built in Yucatán

Life-sized model of prehistoric Sarcosuchus Imperator crocodile under construction

Tizimín, Yucatán — The Environmental Management Unit “Chan Aayin” (Small Crocodile) in Tizimín is constructing a model of a prehistoric crocodile as part of a new attraction. The model will measure 12 meters in length.

The project involves creating a representation of the Sarcosuchus Imperator, which will allow visitors to admire this giant from the dinosaur era.

Israel Cervantes, the biologist responsible for the UMA, explained that this is a life-sized model built with the original dimensions of this extinct reptile that inhabited Africa 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period.

“It is estimated that the Sarcosuchus could weigh up to eight tons. The first remains of this species were found in 1964 by French geologists in the Ténéré desert in Nigeria, but it was not until 2001 that its anatomy, diet and habits were described in detail,” he stated.

He indicated that this crocodile was as large as a bus, with the weight of a small whale and a jaw much more powerful than that of its current relatives.

“The idea of creating the model was inspired by Frady Barr, a herpetologist from National Geographic, who after discovering a Sarcosuchus skull in Africa, worked on its reconstruction and now exhibits it in the United States,” he said.

He commented that the objective of the project is for visitors to see the dimensions of this prehistoric crocodile up close.

He specified that construction began four months ago and is being done with fiberglass, iron, sheets, wire and newspapers to give it shape and consistency.

He added that the project, which involves students from the National Technological Institute of Mexico, Tizimín campus, and volunteers, will conclude in April during the third anniversary of the UMA.

The UMA offers environmental education programs, addressing feeding, recovery, rehabilitation, reintegration and management of these reptiles.
