Tulum, Quintana Roo — Eloy Sebastian Falcon claimed his first NASCAR Mexico victory in the Tulum 100 on Sunday, after original race leader Ruben Rovelo was penalized for a grid infringement.

Rovelo, driving for Alessandro, crossed the finish line first but was demoted to eighth place for failing to respect his chosen starting position on the grid. The penalty handed the win to Falcon, piloting the No. 9 Volaris-Aldo Conti entry.

“I almost let the race slip away,” Falcon said after the podium ceremony. “When I realized I couldn’t pass him, I focused up and told myself second-place points weren’t bad. Then what happened, happened. This is the result of the whole David Tame team’s work, and honestly it was unthinkable for a weekend that started as a nightmare.”

Rodrigo Rejon of GGG finished second after starting third. “Great race — finishing second after all the contact throughout the race has its merit,” Rejon said. “I leave Tulum happy because it was a special race with a truly impressive atmosphere.”

Irwin Vences of JV Motorsports took third place, noting he had to work hard after starting from seventh.

The race’s most dramatic moment came after the halfway point, when a multi-car crash involving five vehicles occurred exiting Turn 3, with some cars climbing over others, bringing the crowd to its feet.

The event featured fighter jets, paragliders, an Airbus A320 from official event airline Viva Aerobus, and hundreds of drones that lit up the Tulum night sky forming the words “NASCAR Mexico Series” and “Tulum 100.”
