Cancun, Quintana Roo — An elderly couple lost their life savings in a theft that escalated into a physical confrontation between their family and store employees, prompting a police and naval response.
The 80-year-old man had been working as a parking attendant outside a supermarket on Andres Quintana Roo Avenue, standing for hours to earn the money. After exchanging small bills for larger denominations, the couple placed the cash in the woman’s purse. While she was having the purse repaired at a nearby shoe store, the money disappeared. When the woman noticed the loss and confronted the store staff, employees denied any knowledge of the cash.
The situation escalated when the couple’s family arrived at the store and allegedly attacked the accused employees with a knife, sparking a brawl. Municipal police and Mexican Navy personnel arrived to restore order. Both parties eventually reached an agreement without any arrests, but they plan to file formal complaints.
The elderly couple, who suffer from hypertension, mobility issues, and other health problems, called their family for help amid the chaotic scene.
During the dispute, both sides argued over the severity of the knife attack, kidnapping threats, the theft of the money, and the impact on the elderly couple’s health.
Other parking attendants at the supermarket expressed distrust, ignorance, and fear of banks, noting that many in their demographic prefer cash, which makes them vulnerable to such crimes. Some said they now feel compelled to use bank cards to protect their money.
