Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A serious rollover crash on the Playa del Carmen–Cancún federal highway left one driver injured but alive Wednesday morning after his vehicle overturned near Villas Morelos.
According to initial reports, the driver of a white Honda was traveling along the federal highway when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to excessive speed. The car reportedly rolled several times across the roadway before coming to rest overturned on the center median.
Witnesses who saw the crash immediately called emergency services. Firefighters and paramedics from Puerto Morelos arrived at the scene and carried out rescue maneuvers to remove the driver from the badly damaged cabin of the vehicle.
Despite the severity of the crash and the extent of the damage, the man was found alive. After receiving first aid at the scene, he was transported urgently to Hospital Galenia in Cancún for specialized medical evaluation. His condition has not been officially released.
Members of the National Guard’s highway division also responded to the accident. Officers secured the area and directed traffic to prevent additional incidents, as passing motorists slowed down to look at the wreckage.
A tow truck later removed the vehicle, which was declared a total loss and taken to the appropriate impound lot while authorities determine liability.
The Playa del Carmen–Cancún stretch of Federal Highway 307 is one of the busiest routes in the Riviera Maya, used daily by commuters, airport transfers, delivery vehicles, tourist transportation, and private cars. Accidents on this corridor can quickly create traffic backups and secondary risks, particularly when drivers reduce speed suddenly or stop to observe emergency scenes.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to respect posted speed limits and drive with caution, especially on high-speed federal highway sections where traffic volumes are heavy and conditions can change quickly.
Excessive speed remains one of the leading factors cited in serious crashes along this route.
