Tulum, Mexico — A pedestrian bridge located over the federal highway in the Akumal delegation has deteriorated to critical condition, with reports of injuries and accidents, according to delegate Antonio Sosa Ruiz.

Structural Damage Poses Immediate Risks

The official stated that the bridge exhibits severe damage, including torn mesh barriers and detached railings, creating constant hazards for those attempting to use it.

“Several residents have suffered cuts from the torn mesh, and there have been cases of pedestrians being hit by vehicles because they prefer crossing the highway rather than risking the bridge,” Sosa Ruiz said.

Among those affected are children and elderly individuals, who are particularly vulnerable due to the infrastructure’s poor condition. The lack of maintenance has rendered the bridge nearly unusable, forcing many to navigate the busy federal highway instead.

Calls for Repairs Go Unanswered

Although the bridge falls under federal jurisdiction, the community has appealed to both municipal and state authorities for repairs.

“We have submitted formal requests, and the response has been that they will review the situation, but we have no confirmed timeline for repairs,” Sosa Ruiz explained.

Located in a high-traffic area, the bridge serves as a critical crossing point for pedestrian safety. However, its deterioration and the absence of maintenance have compelled residents to risk their lives by walking directly across the highway, significantly increasing the likelihood of severe accidents.

Authorities have yet to announce a resolution, leaving the community in continued danger.
