Mexico — The Secretary of Public Education (SEP) has confirmed that the 2025-2026 school calendar will include a "megapuente," or long weekend, for the Day of the Dead, benefiting millions of basic education students across Mexico.
Three Consecutive Days of Rest
According to the agency, classes will be suspended on Friday, October 31, 2025, for the School Technical Council (CTE). This day, combined with Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2, will allow students to enjoy three consecutive days off.
The announcement has been well received by parents and students, who often use these dates to participate in Day of the Dead traditions, visit altars, tour cemeteries, attend parades, or take short trips to emblematic destinations for this celebration.
Not the Only Long Weekend This School Cycle
The October-November long weekend will not be the only one for the 2025-2026 cycle. The official SEP calendar includes three additional long weekends, strategically distributed throughout the year:
- From Friday, November 14, to Monday, November 17, 2025, for the administrative discharge and the commemoration of the Mexican Revolution.
- From Friday, January 30, to Monday, February 2, 2026, for the session of the School Technical Council and Constitution Day.
- From Friday, March 13, to Monday, March 16, 2026, for a new administrative discharge day and the birthday of Benito Juárez.
In total, students will enjoy four official long weekends, in addition to other breaks derived from holidays or suspensions of school activities.
Will Too Many Days Off Affect Classes?
The SEP explained that these adjustments do not affect the fulfillment of the 190 effective days of class required by law for basic education. Furthermore, it reiterated that all schools must respect the official calendar, regardless of whether they implement extended hours or specific work modalities.
