Kantunilkín, Quintana Roo — The cultural collective Kantunich, composed of residents from this town and neighboring communities, celebrated the Summer Solstice with traditional Maya ceremonies and cultural activities in Kantunilkín, located in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

A Ritual of Tradition and Renewal

The event began with a fire ceremony led by Maya priest Germán Pool, who requested permission from the guardian of the Kantunich hill (Yellow Stone) and the Maya deities to proceed with the festivities. The ritual, conducted in the Maya language, included prayers for global peace, wisdom for local and state leaders, and the health and perseverance of the collective’s members.

Pool emphasized the importance of preserving Maya traditions for future generations, ensuring the cultural legacy of Kantunilkín and the broader Maya heritage endures.

A Day of Cultural Activities

Following the ceremony, the collective inaugurated a series of events, including the sale of handicrafts, Maya bingo, storytelling in the Maya language, traditional dances, and a cultural festival featuring local artists. These activities continued throughout the day.

The Summer Solstice, observed on June 21, marks the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This date holds deep cultural and scientific significance and has been celebrated by various civilizations throughout history.

The Kantunich collective aims to rescue, promote, and strengthen local traditions while advocating for the preservation of the nearby Kantunich archaeological site. The group plans to host monthly events on the 21st of each month, beginning with this solstice celebration.

The Kantunich collective’s efforts highlight the ongoing cultural revitalization in Quintana Roo, ensuring Maya traditions remain vibrant for generations to come.
