Cozumel, Mexico — Cozumel will be promoted as the premier destination for weekend getaways under a new initiative aimed at attracting regional tourism and strengthening the island’s low season. The program, supported by the federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) and local businesses, will feature attractive promotions to revitalize the island’s cultural and economic activity.
A Weekend Getaway Strategy
The plan, presented to Cozumel’s business leaders, seeks to position the island as an ideal weekend or long-weekend destination, capitalizing on its proximity to states such as Yucatán, Campeche, and Chiapas. The initiative, titled "The Great Escape: Tourism’s Best Deal," is modeled after SECTUR’s broader campaign to stimulate regional travel through discounted packages and collaborations with tourism service providers.
Under the slogan "Escape to Cozumel," businesses will roll out special promotions designed to generate steady economic activity across all sectors while fostering cultural and recreational events. A key focus will be revitalizing Cozumel’s downtown area, a cultural and maritime hub that merchants and tourists have long sought to reinvigorate.
Economic and Cultural Revival
Authorities and business leaders emphasized that the program aims to create a virtuous cycle by encouraging consistent visitor traffic from nearby regions. The strategy is expected to benefit all productive sectors of the island while bringing renewed energy to its central district.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to bolster Cozumel’s appeal during traditionally slower tourism periods, ensuring sustained economic growth and cultural vibrancy.
