Cozumel Mayor Faces Low Approval Amid Security Concerns and Governance Criticism

Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez addressing public concerns

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez faces continued public disapproval with a 50.3% approval rating in January 2026, according to a recent poll, as residents criticize his handling of security, transparency, and public works.

The survey by Demoscopia Digital found Chacón Méndez’s approval rose slightly from 46.8% in December 2025 but remains below the 60% threshold he has never surpassed during his 2024-2027 administration. His highest rating to date is 58.8%.

Residents cite concerns over alleged opacity in resource management, unfinished public projects, and perceptions that the mayor governs with privileges while the population faces hardships. “The citizens of Cozumel have not forgotten the accusations of opacity in handling resources, the incomplete works, and the perception that he governs with privileges while people face shortages,” the report noted.

Security issues have also intensified public dissatisfaction. In January 2026, at least nine vehicles were intentionally set on fire in various neighborhoods, creating fear among residents and highlighting perceived failures in municipal security strategies.

The poll results suggest Chacón Méndez’s political future is uncertain, with the possibility of alternation in upcoming elections becoming more realistic as his administration struggles to gain broader public support.
