Cozumel, Mexico — The Second National Campaign Against Dengue commenced this Monday in Cozumel, where authorities reported 128 probable cases of dengue and seven confirmed infections in July alone. A total of 20 cases have been recorded this year, prompting intensified fumigation efforts, distribution of larvicide, and public clean-up initiatives. Officials, however, emphasize that community participation is critical to curbing the spread of the disease.
Targeted Efforts in High-Risk Areas
Juan Antonio Dzul Cámara, Deputy Director of Health, stated that the campaign will cover the entire urban area, with a focus on neighborhoods most affected by dengue outbreaks. These include Repobladores de 1848, Adolfo López Mateos, Flores Magón 1 and 2, 10 de Abril, FOVISSSTE, and Flamingos 1 and 2.
Dzul Cámara clarified that all confirmed cases so far have been of classic dengue fever, with no reports of hemorrhagic dengue, Zika, or chikungunya. The 128 suspected cases remain under observation, with health authorities implementing containment measures such as fumigation around affected households.
Authorities Urge Public Cooperation
As part of the campaign, health workers are conducting thermal fogging treatments and distributing abate powder to eliminate mosquito larvae in water storage containers. Dzul Cámara stressed that these efforts will be ineffective without public involvement.
“These measures are futile if the community does not keep their yards free of debris and standing water where mosquitoes breed,” he said. He called on residents to actively participate in clean-up drives and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.
The campaign combines government-led fumigation and larvicide distribution with neighborhood clean-up initiatives, underscoring the shared responsibility between authorities and citizens in combating dengue.
