Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel launched a rabies vaccination drive this week, offering 3,000 free doses for dogs and cats at fixed and mobile sites across the island.
Hugo Pérez, who heads the island’s Vectors area, said the campaign will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the possibility of extending into the weekend if demand is high.
A permanent post will remain at El Caracol, while roving teams set up in areas including Emiliano Zapata, San Gervasio, Miraflores and Las Fincas. Officials also plan to deploy a mobile unit to reach outlying neighborhoods, small ranches and hard-to-access settlements.
Owners are asked to bring dogs on a leash and, in the case of large animals, with a muzzle. Cats should be transported in carriers, pillowcases or sturdy bags to make handling easier.
The campaign aims to broaden preventive coverage among the island’s pets and reduce risks related to rabies. The year’s first round administered about 7,000 doses, so the additional 3,000 should bring officials close to their annual target of 10,000.
