Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Administrators of the San Joaquin Parish in Bacalar have warned the religious community and the general public about an individual impersonating one of their priests, who visits businesses and homes in the name of the “Saint” to request financial or in-kind support.
“Through this notice, the San Joaquin Parish in Bacalar calls for alertness and prudence regarding reports received about a person who is posing as a priest of our Church,” states the communication disseminated today in this locality.
It adds that the person goes to businesses to ask for donations, taking advantage of the December holiday festivities and surprising the good faith of parishioners.
“It has been detected that the individual shown in photographs is making visits to businesses and establishments, asking for monetary contributions and presenting himself as the parish priest of the community. It is essential to remember that as a Church we do not go from house to house asking for financial support,” emphasizes the document also posted on the Church’s site.
It also makes a recommendation for citizens of good faith, as any priest in active service must carry their valid Ministerial License Credential, issued by their respective Diocese. “You have the right to request it,” it adds.
The parish priests specify that sacraments (such as baptisms, confirmations, marriages) must be celebrated in parish churches or authorized chapels, not in private homes or event halls without prior permission; therefore, citizens should not be surprised by this person who offers such services at home.
“If you have been contacted by this person or have been a victim of any deception, we urge you to report it immediately to the parish. We deeply regret any confusion or harm this situation may cause. We ask all the faithful to disseminate this information to prevent more people from being taken advantage of in their good faith,” concludes the document.
