Cancún, Q. Roo — The spawning season of the blue crab, which typically occurs between the months of September and October, will undergo a significant modification this year. The City Council has announced that, unlike previous years, the mass participation of civil associations and the general public in support operations will not be permitted.
Fernando Haro Salinas, the municipal director of Ecology, explained that the 2025 conservation program will focus exclusively on specialized personnel and technical organizations. The Directorate of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) will be in charge of ensuring the adequate management of the species.
This measure responds to recent changes in the regulations for the protection of species at risk, which restrict direct interaction with the crabs to trained personnel. According to Haro Salinas, large campaigns were previously conducted to involve associations and citizens in supporting the crossing, but now, due to the new regulations, only the presence of experts will be allowed.
Furthermore, it was reported that a volunteer campaign will be carried out, but with a limited number of participants, focused primarily on those who already have prior knowledge on the subject.
