CFE Blackouts Cause Water Shortages in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Frequent blackouts by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) remain the main cause of water service interruptions in Playa del Carmen, according to local councilwoman Danna Ramírez Saldaña.

Ramírez, who chairs the Human Rights Commission, made the statement after inspecting Aguakan’s water facilities in Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras. She explained that each time a power outage occurs, the concessionaire’s pumping stations activate safety systems and shut down to prevent equipment damage. Restarting the system delays water restoration for thousands of residents.

“The main problem continues to be the lack of electricity. When blackouts happen, the plants stop for safety, and that causes water supply to take longer to normalize,” Ramírez said.

She called on CFE to prioritize fixing power failures affecting Quintana Roo, noting that families suffer a double impact — losing both electricity and water access.

The inspection aimed to verify that hydraulic infrastructure is in optimal condition for the current hurricane season and to reduce risks from potential storms.

During the visit, Aguakan also presented infrastructure expansion plans to address urban growth, particularly in Ciudad Mayakoba and the area where the Viviendas del Bienestar housing project will be developed.

Ramírez added that citizen complaints about leaks, damaged manhole covers, and other issues are being handled through a permanent coordination chat between municipal authorities and the concessionaire, allowing follow-up on reports.

She also reported that ongoing works in the Gonzalo Guerrero and Zazil-Ha neighborhoods are progressing on schedule, with a commitment to complete them within agreed timelines.
