CFE to Launch 2026 Summer Subsidy, Cutting Electricity Bills for Hot States

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will launch a summer subsidy in 2026 to reduce electricity bills for households in hot states, with the federal government approving 87.8 billion pesos to contain tariff increases.

The subsidy, which typically runs from May through September or October, targets states with high temperatures where air conditioning use drives up consumption. It applies automatically to eligible households without requiring additional paperwork.

States Receiving the Subsidy

The subsidy will cover multiple states across Mexico, including:

  • Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas
  • San Luis Potosí, Colima, Nayarit, and Morelos
  • Guerrero, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo

How the Subsidy Works

The subsidy uses differentiated tariffs based on regional temperature averages. Areas with temperatures above 33 degrees Celsius qualify for the lowest domestic rate (1F), allowing higher electricity consumption at reduced costs. Families could save up to 300 pesos on their bills during peak summer months.

Energy analyst Carlos Flores noted that while subsidies keep tariffs stable for consumers, the cost shifts from electricity bills to public budgets. “The expense doesn’t disappear—it moves from the CFE bill to taxes,” Flores said, highlighting potential medium-term pressure on public finances.

Background and Context

The approved subsidy amount represents a 3.5% increase from 2025’s allocation. Experts attribute the rise to both consumer protection needs and anticipation of financial pressures within the state-owned utility.

Mexico’s dependence on imported natural gas from the United States—with prices up 80% since December—contributes to the subsidy’s importance in maintaining affordable electricity rates.

Separately, CFE customers should ensure their account information remains current, particularly after meter installations or consumption adjustments. Changing account ownership requires up-to-date identification, tax documents, and proof of property status, with no outstanding balances.

Energy Efficiency Recommendations

Experts recommend adopting efficient consumption habits alongside the subsidy to control costs. Improving home ventilation, reducing air conditioning use, and maintaining electrical equipment can significantly impact electricity bills even with subsidized rates.
