Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A burned car with human remains inside was discovered Friday afternoon on a rural road in the municipality of Bacalar, authorities said.

The vehicle, a Chevrolet Corsa, was found engulfed in flames on the road connecting the communities of Kuchumatan and Manuel Avila Camacho. The fire reduced the car to charred metal within minutes, preventing any rescue attempt.

A witness recorded video of the scene, showing skeletal remains among the twisted metal. In the footage, the witness can be heard saying: “Inside it’s burning, I don’t know who the man is, here inside look… if you can see, that’s the bone and the man inside… and it’s something… and here there’s really no signal, I’m going to move away a bit to get signal. The license plate is the one I sent you, here it is, look, it’s SNL-85-385.”

Due to poor cellphone coverage in the area, emergency alerts were delayed. Once the report was confirmed, officers from the Bacalar Municipal Police and the Secretariat of Public Security arrived to cordon off the scene.

Forensic experts and investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office later arrived to collect evidence and recover the remains, which were taken to the Forensic Medical Service for identification through forensic anthropology and genetic profiling.

Authorities have not determined whether the incident was a traffic accident or a crime. The investigation remains open.
