Cancún, Mexico — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta led a beach cleanup initiative at Playa Delfines, collaborating with students and faculty from the French Institute to promote environmental awareness and preserve the world-renowned beauty of Cancún’s shores.

Community Efforts Yield Tangible Results

At the start of the event, Mayor Peralta thanked participants for their dedication to building a cleaner and more equitable city. She reported that from October 2024 to May 2025, cleanup efforts at Playa Delfines had collected 372.90 cubic meters of sargassum and 14.5 cubic meters of seagrass. Additionally, crews had sifted 231,156 square meters of sand and manually raked 3,305,348.94 square meters of the beach area.

“The municipal government works daily to keep our beaches clean, but when more hands are involved, the results are even better,” Peralta emphasized, underscoring the importance of community participation.

José Antonio de la Torre Chambé, Director General of Public Services, highlighted that beach protection is an ongoing effort. Weekend activities aim to engage citizens and raise awareness about conserving this vital natural resource.

Youth Leadership and Environmental Education

During the event, students Xiomara Cázares and Emiliano Báez presented the “Cancún somos todos” decalogue, a set of guidelines for protecting the environment, respecting wildlife, and fostering sustainable practices in the community.

Before the cleanup began, attendees received informational talks on key topics, including sargassum season, sea turtle nesting, Blue Flag beach certification, and the importance of keeping beaches free of debris.

Hands-On Conservation Efforts

Mayor Peralta joined cleanup groups in collecting waste such as bottle caps, plastics, straws, and microplastics. Teams also conducted sand sifting and transect surveys to gather data on the beach’s condition.

Public Services personnel supported the effort with manual and mechanical cleaning to ensure Playa Delfines remains in optimal condition for tourists and locals alike.
