Cancun, Quintana Roo — The 39th National Ice Skating Championship will be held in Cancun from May 18 to 24, marking a historic first for the Caribbean coastal city. The event will take place at the Happy Arena in Plaza Outlet, located on the Cancun-Puerto Morelos highway near the airport.

Officials announced the competition at a press conference Tuesday at the venue. The championship will feature around 400 skaters from across Mexico, including athletes from Estado de Mexico, Mexico City, Puebla, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Nuevo Leon, Jalisco, Tabasco, Yucatan, San Luis Potosi, and Quintana Roo, as well as representatives from the National Polytechnic Institute and Metepec.

Two-time Olympic skater Donovan Carrillo, Mexico’s top figure skater, will participate in the event.

Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Commission for Youth and Sport (CODEQ); Alejandro Luna Lopez, director of the Benito Juarez municipality’s Institute of Physical Culture and Sport; and Jesus Alcantara, director of Happy Arena, attended the announcement.

Organizers highlighted that the championship will boost sports tourism by attracting athletes, coaches, families, and visitors from various states, generating significant economic impact and promoting Cancun as a host city for national and international events.

Activities will run daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the Happy Arena during the championship is free. A preview exhibition featuring local Cancun skaters was held Tuesday.
