Cancún’s First ‘Drag Catrínate’ Celebrates Diversity & Day of the Dead!

Cancún is set to host its first "Drag Catrínate" event this weekend, in a celebration of Mexican Day of the Dead traditions and diversity. This inaugural event is an initiative of the Department of Attention to Diversity Affairs, aimed at uniting groups and activists through the art of cross-dressing.

Linger Méndez Vidal, coordinator of Linkage, Research and Social Projects, revealed that six contestants will display their skills in makeup, costume design, and artistic performance. "This is our first project as a department, and we aim to make it an annual event," she said.

The event will welcome special guests from municipalities including Isla Mujeres, Solidaridad, and Puerto Morelos. Dance and singing academies will also participate, with over 50 artists expected to take the stage. The event, scheduled for October 26 and 27, will begin at 6 pm and is designed to be a family-friendly gathering.

The winners of the contest will participate in the Hanal Pixán activities in Puerto Juárez. Méndez Vidal also noted that the newly formed department has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the sexual diversity community and the health sector, offering guidance in hotels and universities.
