Cancún Festival Celebrates Afro-Descendant Culture With Dance Performances

Cancún, Quintana Roo — About 6% of Cancún’s population identifies as Afro-descendant, according to Carlos López, director of the Benito Juárez Institute of Culture and Arts. López announced the second edition of the Festival de Danzas Negras (Black Dances Festival), scheduled for Aug. 7-12 at various cultural venues across the city.

The festival aims to recognize and make visible the cultural richness of Afro-descendant communities, while strengthening inclusion through artistic expressions that form part of the historical and cultural heritage of the Mexican Caribbean.

Organizers expect more than 10,000 attendees to enjoy dance performances, music, conferences, and cultural activities at the Teatro de la Ciudad, the Teatro 8 de Octubre, and the Parque de las Palapas. Groups and representatives from Afro-descendant communities will participate.

López emphasized that the institute maintains a permanent agenda to promote cultural diversity in Cancún, adding that events like this bring residents and visitors closer to artistic manifestations that enrich the municipality’s identity. The festival is being promoted through various channels, including screens at the Cancún International Airport, to expand cultural offerings for tourists and locals, showcasing the city’s diversity and artistic expressions beyond its tourist appeal.
