Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún is ramping up efforts to combat homophobia, transphobia and biphobia with a series of workshops, marches and preventive brigades aimed at promoting inclusion, mental health and LGBTQ+ rights.

The city’s Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity announced a cycle of talks and training sessions designed to reach more than 600 people in schools and businesses across the municipality.

Director Noamhy Hermida Nieves said the activities will focus on fostering gender perspective and creating safe spaces in both educational and workplace settings.

During the first quarter of 2026, the directorate held 12 talks that benefited 350 people, covering topics such as sexual diversity, prevention of sexually transmitted infections and mental health care — now considered a top concern within the community.

According to data from INEGI (the national statistics agency), 88.7% of the LGBTQ+ population in Mexico experiences stress, and more than half report symptoms of depression.

In response, the directorate is coordinating with the DIF (family welfare agency), the Health Department and the Municipal Women’s Institute to refer cases for specialized care. So far this year, seven people have received psychological support.

The activity calendar kicks off on May 16 with a march organized by the Cancún Pride Official collective, considered the start of Pride mobilizations in Quintana Roo. A second march, led by Cancún Pride International, will follow on June 6, consolidating several weeks of activism and visibility in the tourist destination.

Hermida Nieves noted that no new reports of discrimination have emerged within the municipal administration or the private and academic institutions visited, attributing this to ongoing preventive and awareness work across the city.
