Cancun Business Leaders Push to Revitalize Hotel Zone

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Business leaders in Cancun are pushing to revitalize the city’s hotel zone, aiming to restore its image as Mexico’s premier tourist destination.

Efforts are underway through working groups involving the private sector, local authorities, and urban development councils, according to Miguel Angel Lemus, president of the Quintana Roo Association of Real Estate Developers.

Lemus said the Urban Development Council of Benito Juarez has been analyzing development issues, particularly in the hotel zone, where so-called “black spots” are being addressed. He noted that several promising projects are in the pipeline.

Recent improvements include enhanced landscaping along Boulevard Kukulkan, with new palm trees. Lemus said further progress is expected in infrastructure and wastewater treatment plant upgrades.

One notable project is the planned reactivation of Plaza Flamingos, which has reached consensus among all condominium owners. Lemus described this as a positive development.

He emphasized that the revitalization does not aim to increase the number of hotels or vacation rentals in the area.

“A good phase is coming for the hotel zone. There is interesting news ahead,” Lemus said.

The business leader estimated that visible changes could begin by 2027, following the review of the Urban Development Program (PDU).

Investment continues to flow into the state, with new hotels being built in the Riviera Maya, Costa Mujeres, and other areas, Lemus added.

Hoteliers have stressed that renovating and addressing problem areas in the hotel zone is a priority, as it is the first impression tourists get of Cancun.
