Cancún, Quintana Roo — The municipal market in Puerto Juárez is scheduled to open on October 30 with 12 stalls already assigned, after renovation work finished at least two years ago and repeated expectations of a launch came and went.
Berenice Sosa, secretary of welfare for Benito Juárez, said the building is expected to begin operations that day, shortly before the start of Janal Pixán celebrations — the Yucatecan Day of the Dead observances — which officials hope will boost local commerce.
The 12 available spaces were assigned through a public call and in line with the applicable regulations, Sosa said. Crews are currently making adjustments so vendors can start working during one of Puerto Juárez’s busiest cultural seasons.
Crafts, Food and Coffee
The stalls will cover a range of businesses, including craft sales, food and a coffee shop. Officials said the goal is to offer visitors more options and create opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
The opening also gives artisans and producers a place to sell goods they make themselves, which they hope will raise incomes and generate jobs, whether through hiring staff or through family-run businesses.
The timing alongside Janal Pixán could help draw customers, given the crowds expected during the celebrations. How much of a commercial boost the market sees will depend on visitor traffic and the activity vendors manage to generate.
A Long-Awaited Start
After a lengthy period of construction work and anticipation, the market is finally moving toward commercial activity. Its launch could give stallholders an initial push and help energize the Puerto Juárez economy.
Officials cautioned, however, that the start of operations and the opening to the public still must be confirmed.
