Cancún, Mexico — The Cancún School of Artistic Initiation has announced its second generation of students, expanding enrollment and establishing a municipal children’s choir as it strengthens arts education in the city.
The program, launched by the Benito Juárez municipal government through the Cancún Institute of Culture and Arts in coordination with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), will admit 100 new students aged 14 to 16. These students will receive nationally accredited artistic training.
Unlike traditional cultural workshops, the school offers a three-year evening program that begins with four hours of weekly classes and increases to six hours from the second semester onward. The curriculum includes:
- Visual arts, focusing on plastic techniques and aesthetic fundamentals
- Dance, emphasizing body expression and rhythmic technique
- Music, covering musical language and instrumental practice
- Theater, oriented toward developing stage skills and interpretation
Students who complete the program receive an official certificate from INBAL.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must reside in Cancún, be between 14 and 16 years old, participate in a mandatory audition, and sign a commitment letter with their guardians ensuring attendance and completion. The 2026 admission schedule includes:
- Registration closes: February 9
- Auditions: February 13-14
- Interviews: February 23-24
- Final enrollment: February 25-27
- Classes begin: March 2
Classes will be held at the Alfredo V. Bonfil Pinto Elementary School, located in Supermanzana 22 behind Parque de las Palapas.
Municipal Children’s Choir
In a parallel initiative, the municipality is forming the Benito Juárez Municipal Children’s Choir. After closing applications, 60 children aged 7 to 13 participated in auditions held January 30-31 at the School of Artistic Initiation.
During the tryouts, applicants performed a simple song and completed melodic and rhythmic imitation exercises before a specialized committee. Only 30 children were selected to continue in the process to officially join the choir, which will require at least five hours of weekly rehearsal.
The auditions were conducted by teachers Noé Garrido, Laura Danitza Díaz, and Yahzelyh de la Paz Martínez, members of the Municipal Choir Company.
