Cancun and Playa del Carmen Seek ‘Barrio Magico’ Designation

Calle 38 Playa del Carmen

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The municipalities of Benito Juarez (Cancun) and Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) are moving forward with applications to Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat (SECTUR) for the federal “Barrio Magico” designation, aiming to diversify their tourism offerings and preserve cultural identity in key urban areas.

The program, run by the federal government, recognizes consolidated neighborhoods with strong historical, cultural, gastronomic, or architectural value that deserve national and international promotion. Unlike the “Pueblos Magicos” (Magical Towns) program, this designation targets capital cities or established tourist destinations that need alternative attractions for visitors.

In Cancun, local authorities are promoting foundational areas of the city center, including the surroundings of Supermanzanas 22 and 23 and Parque de las Palapas — spaces that hold the historical memory of the destination’s birth. In Playa del Carmen, officials are evaluating polygons with strong community roots, where multicultural mix and local artistic expressions serve as the main draw.

Compiling the technical files requires close collaboration among citizen committees, service providers, and the local business sector, who must endorse the feasibility of the spaces and guarantee the maintenance of peace and urban order in the selected areas.

If the designations are granted during the current 2026 cycle, both localities will benefit from resources and strategic partnerships for urban improvement. This includes facade renovation, artistic lighting, and standardized signage through the federal program “Rutas Magicas de Color.”

Municipal tourism secretaries agreed that the designation will represent a direct economic boost for small businesses, traditional restaurants, artisans, and downtown hoteliers, ensuring that the economic benefits of the tourism industry are distributed more equitably outside the beachfront hotel complexes.
