Third Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Campaign Transforms Lives in Quintana Roo

Governor Mara Lezama and Verónica Lezama speaking with a child patient and family at the hospital

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and the honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo system, Verónica Lezama Espinosa, visited patients and families taking part in the Third Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Campaign at the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital.

The officials greeted children, adolescents, and their families from Cancún, Lázaro Cárdenas, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, and Othón P. Blanco, reaffirming the government’s commitment to health, well-being, and social justice.

Five maxillofacial surgery specialists — four Mexican and one from Ecuador — along with a dental surgeon and two Mexican residents performed 18 surgical procedures on patients aged 2 to 17.

Governor Lezama praised the altruistic work of the medical team, especially Dr. Raymundo, Dr. Juan Sebastián, and Dr. Erik Núñez, for joining the cause and transforming lives through specialized medical care.

Among the patients was 3-month-old Aitana López from the mainland zone of Isla Mujeres. She was admitted for a blood transfusion due to anemia but, because she also has a cleft palate, was included in the program.

Lezama thanked IMSS Bienestar, the medical and administrative staff of the hospital, the State Health Department, and the DIF Quintana Roo team for their support and coordination.

Also participating in the visit were Health Secretary Flavio Carlos Rosado, Deputy Health Secretary Jorge Gutiérrez, Hospital Deputy Director Ricardo Rodríguez, and Karen Domínguez, head of the Health Care Department of IMSS Bienestar in Quintana Roo.
