Falling Tourist Numbers Trigger Commercial Crisis in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The low tourist season is hitting Cozumel’s business community hard, with a drop in visitor arrivals cutting into sales and squeezing cash flow for small and medium-sized businesses, according to Eduardo Morales, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) on the island.

The reduced flow of tourists is putting direct pressure on businesses that depend on visitor spending, particularly during the months when revenue declines and covering day-to-day operating costs becomes more difficult.

Morales warned that the situation could worsen if the slowdown persists, leaving some establishments struggling to meet their financial commitments and maintain jobs. The risk, he said, goes beyond lower revenue to the very ability of businesses to stay open.

The business leader called for measures to attract more visitors and boost spending at local establishments. For the commercial sector, reviving tourism activity is essential to containing the drop in sales during this time of year.

Proposed actions include promotions and coordinated strategies between authorities and business owners to create incentives that encourage more tourists to visit and spend on the island. Morales said the private sector needs conditions that can cushion the blow of the low season in the Mexican Caribbean.

“We need economic incentives and an urgent boost to local consumption to avoid business closures and job losses during these difficult months,” he said.

The situation comes as tourism officials continue to advance projects aimed at strengthening the island’s infrastructure and appeal. The state tourism department, led by Bernardo Cueto Riestra, recently took part in the third session of Cozumel’s 2026 Tourism Advisory Council meeting, where progress was presented on the comprehensive boardwalk renovation project promoted by the Fideicomiso para el Bienestar del Turismo Crucerista en Quintana Roo (FICQROO). According to the report, the initiative is currently in a community outreach phase, even as local businesses face an immediate drop in income.
