Cancún, Mexico — The Cancún International Airport has experienced three consecutive days of flight cancellations, delays, and diversions due to operational disruptions at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM) caused by heavy rainfall.
Widespread Flight Disruptions
According to data from Southeast Airports (Asur), the Cancún airport reported more than 27 affected operations over the three-day period. On August 10, four domestic departures were delayed, and two international flights were forced to make technical landings after being unable to reach Mexico City.
The situation worsened on August 11, with an additional delayed flight and seven cancellations. By August 12, eight more arrivals and departures were delayed.
The AICM suspended all operations early that morning, leading to 16 diverted flights, 120 delays, and approximately 19,500 affected passengers.
Affected Airlines and Routes
Among the delayed arrivals in Cancún were a Volaris flight and a Turkish Airlines flight originating from Istanbul, Turkey. Six departures were also delayed, including three Aeroméxico flights bound for Mexico City, two Volaris flights, and a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul.
Aeroméxico issued a statement warning passengers that the disruptions could persist throughout the week due to ongoing rainfall in the capital. The airline urged travelers to check their flight status via its website and review its protection policies for rebooking options.
The airline emphasized that the situation was beyond its control and called on federal authorities and the Mexico City government to take immediate action to ensure the AICM’s infrastructure functions properly and to implement necessary preventive measures.
