Canadian woman found with signs of violence in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A foreign woman of Canadian origin was located on the morning of December 25 with visible signs of violence and alleged abuse after being abandoned on a public street at the intersection of Avenida Universidades and Paseo del Mayab, outside the Autonomous University of the State of Quintana Roo (UQROO) campus in Playa del Carmen.

According to information gathered at the scene, the woman was disoriented and presented injuries to her face, in addition to damaged clothing. Upon partially regaining consciousness, she asked for help from passersby in the area, who alerted authorities through the emergency number.

The woman stated she could not remember exactly how she arrived at the site or the circumstances following the events. She indicated that her last memory was attending a gathering on the night of December 24, where she was celebrating and accepted a drink offered by several individuals. Subsequently, she lost consciousness and, upon coming to, found herself alone, with visible bruises and signs that suggest she was a victim of an assault.

Elements of the Playa del Carmen Secretariat of Citizen Security arrived at the location to provide first aid and safeguard the woman. Due to the nature of the case, the intervention of the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) was requested, which activated the corresponding protocols.

Minutes later, an ambulance arrived to conduct the initial medical assessment and determined her transfer to a city hospital, where she would receive specialized attention and the necessary studies would be carried out to document the injuries.

Authorities informed that the victim will have accompaniment during the legal process and will be put in contact with the diplomatic representation of her country for the corresponding procedures. The area where she was found was inspected as part of the initial investigations, while data is being gathered to clarify the facts and locate those responsible.

As of now, no arrests have been reported in relation to this case.
