The Government of Canada has issued a travel alert to its citizens due to the “high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping” in Mexico.

Mexico appears in yellow on the alert, prompting Canada to recommend “extreme caution” when traveling to the country.

Canada’s travel alert classifies risk levels by destination using a color-coded system:

  • RED: AVOID ALL TRAVEL.
  • ORANGE: AVOID NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL.
  • YELLOW: EXERCISE A HIGH DEGREE OF CAUTION.
  • GREEN: TAKE NORMAL SECURITY PRECAUTIONS.

Canada has asked its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to thirteen states in the Mexican Republic due to high levels of violence, organized crime, and kidnapping risk. These entities are:

  • Chiapas.
  • Chihuahua.
  • Colima.
  • Guanajuato.
  • Guerrero.
  • Jalisco.
  • Michoacán.
  • Nayarit.
  • Nuevo León.
  • Sinaloa.
  • Sonora.
  • Tamaulipas.
  • Zacatecas.

“Exercise a high degree of caution at all times, be aware of local media, and follow the instructions of local authorities,” stated the Canadian government in its travel alert.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reacted to this travel alert for Mexico issued by Canadian authorities.

“Mexico is great and everyone wants to know our country. They can come to Mexico; here we welcome everyone with open arms,” she stated during the morning press conference at the National Palace on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

The Mexican leader noted that Canadian tourism has increased in the Mexican Republic and emphasized that “Mexico is in fashion.”

“It has increased a lot (Canadian tourism) and will continue to increase because Mexico is great and everyone wants to know our country. Mexico is in fashion,” argued Sheinbaum Pardo in her message.
