Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Cyber Police this week took down 10 pages and groups along with 286 profiles and posts used to deceive people, harvest personal data or promote illegal activity, state officials said.
The Public Security Department (SSC) said in a statement that 90 of the removed posts were tied to scams designed to steal passwords. Another 89 were linked to crimes against health, the term Mexican authorities use for drug-related offenses. The department did not specify what each category contained or which platforms hosted the material.
Officials said the unit also handled 246 reports of cybercrimes during the same period.
How the scams work
The SSC warned that posts and messages circulating online contain suspicious links, fake promotions or offers of supposed account verification. The goal, according to the department, is to obtain passwords and gain access to private information.
How to protect yourself from digital fraud
The department advised residents to take the following precautions:
- Avoid opening links from unknown sources.
- Never share passwords or verification codes.
- Enable two-factor authentication.
- Use strong, separate passwords for each account.
- Verify that pages and profiles are genuine before handing over personal data or making a transaction.
What to do with a suspicious post
Officials recommended checking the source and reporting the post, profile or message directly on the platform where it appears. They also urged users not to share such content, so as not to help spread it.
