Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The recent bull shark diving season in Playa del Carmen has been one of the most productive in recent years, with activity reaching nearly 50% during April and May despite the official season ending in March.

Diving instructor Ramón Magaña reported that the last sighting occurred on April 2, extending the season atypically. He also noted a significant increase in the number of bull sharks compared to previous years.

Conservation Efforts Yield Results

Magaña attributed the success to coordinated efforts between the local community and fishing cooperatives, particularly those from Isla Mujeres, which ceased capturing bull sharks, aiding in their conservation.

Each year, female bull sharks migrate to the waters off Playa del Carmen between November and March, making the area a key destination for ecotourism. The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) oversees and certifies diving operators to ensure sustainable practices.

The collaboration between service providers and authorities has strengthened the region’s ecotourism profile while contributing to the protection of a species vital to marine ecosystem balance.
